After “Samurai Song” by Robert Pinksy

When we had no sleep we stayed up waiting to fall asleep.
When we had no reason, we made excuses.
When we lost a loved one, we had loneliness in us.
When we had an enemy, it was our duty to defeat him.
When we had no life, death seemed so close.
When we had no faith, fortune prevailed.
When we had war, we looked for peace.
